What has changed?

To make BackupBob even easier to navigate and edit, we have improved the Bobdrive settings window. This keeps the same great features but restructures the menu to make it quicker to navigate.

BackupBob Security

BackupBob is one of the most secure cloud storage services on the market and gives users the ability to encrypt all file transfers. This stops people from intercepting files while they are being transferred. However, this does not address the physical security of your computer. Thieves may be able to simply turn on your computer and easily access files in your Briefcase. To solve this problem we have added two key new features; briefcase encryption, and automatic log out.

Will my software automatically update?

If you have the BackupBob Desktop Software installed you will be see a pop up asking you to upgrade in the next few hours.

At BackupBob we understand that many people like Windows XP and do not want to upgrade or change to another system. Therefore we have made our BackupBob desktop software fully compatible with XP. This allows you to have all the same features as users with Mac OS X Mountain Lion or Windows 7.

However over the past decade Microsoft has released a selection of free updates for Windows XP. These have fixed small bugs in the system reducing the chances of your computer crashing or people being able to hack into your system. We are strongly focused on security at BackupBob and so we make sure our software only supports the latest versions of XP.

Recently a few customers have got in contact with us after having problems installing or updating the software on their machines. The problem was that the customers were not using the latest version of XP and after downloading a few quick updates BackupBob worked fine.

If you are using a Windows XP machine and have not downloaded any of the updates, we suggest you use the following guides:

How does BackupBob work?

BackupBob automatically uploads content to the cloud while you work. The software mirrors your computer and makes an exact copy of your files online. If you modify a file on your desktop the software will automatically replace the old version in the cloud. If you delete an unneeded document, BackupBob will delete the file on the cloud. If you accidentally delete a file from your computer you can go to the cloud and restore it (this option is available up to 30 days after the file has been deleted).

How do I restore my files?

If your computer breaks you can place all your files onto a new computer. Our desktop program BackupBob Restore is available on Windows and Mac and can be downloaded for free here.

Simply install the program, select the files you want to place back on your computer and click the restore button. All of your important files will now be back on your device.

BackupBob will automatically notify you that an update is available – simply follow the instructions on your screen to perform the update.

The Mac version of BackupBob has built-in Restore capability.

The new version – version 1.7 – features a wide range of improvements to reliability, stability and speed including:
- Faster syncing of files.
- Lower memory and CPU usage.
- Backup files with exceptionally long paths.
- Improved the restore software, which supports long paths and includes better error handling.
- A number of background performance and stability improvements.

If you already have the software installed then you will be prompted at some point over the next two weeks to upgrade. Just follow the on-screen instructions – it’s very straightforward and only takes a few minutes. If you don’t have the software installed, or you would like to get the newest version immediately, then you can download it from the Software Download section of your web portal.

The new software has the following improvements:

• See your backup progress in Detailed Status – need to know how much you’ve got left to backup? You can now see your backup progress directly within the Windows software by looking at the Detailed Status screen.
• Comments for business customers – since we launched BackupBob for Business, business customers using the web portal have been able to add comments to files that are visible to all users within the company. Now comments can be viewed and added from the Windows software too. Just right click on any file in your BackupBob Briefcase or in Team Folders to view or add comments.
• Improved sync engine – the newest client has a number of improvements to the way it syncs your files, making it more robust and even more efficient that it was before.
• New look branding – the client has had its branding and look and feel updated to match our new look website.
